If you're interested in the law, and have little or no idea how complex cases are brought to court, this is the book for you. ACA is equally gripping as human story (what a story!) and legal procedural (what a case!). I never realized what lengths some lawyers will go to to see a case through, what sacrifices they make along the way, and how much can be personally at stake for them. ACA is ultimately about families -- who lost family members on account of the willful negligence of major corporations -- and a town in Massachusetts. But the lawyer who fought their case is near the center of this telling, and rightly so. Were it not for his extraordinary efforts -- and those of his colleagues -- justice might never have been done in this extremely disturbing case. Kudos to Schlichtmann et al for a job very well done (the judgment against Beatrice and Grace should have been much much higher), and to Harr for an outstanding book.

I get many mental links to USA Network's "Burn Notice" and a host of other thriller characters by various authors. Most of us know that the alphbet soup of government special agents fail to play nice with each other as budget and power issues often trump doing the right thing. The 'lone wolf' who ignores all interagency rivalry is also a well trod path.

Thor likes Horvath to play with toys - pistols, assault rifles and shotguns; tasers and even pepper gas shoved in the ear to give the tangos a memorable experience - a Thor 'standard' or trademark. Thor's DHS experiences come into play - giving us a writers tease or a peek into black ops. Why am I thinking that Thor is somewhat frustrated in what actually happens at DHS vs what he'd LIKE to see done?

As a summer read in paperback - its a fast moving ride - as Horvath cuts a mighty swath through bad guys and girls, good guys and all those inbetween. He befriends ladies, dogs and dwarfs. Not quite predictable - used a few twists and turns to keep me going - but falls short of 'WOW' as some earlier story lines have done.

As a retired intelligence soldier who works as an Army contractor - I share an environment with returning combat OIF and OEF veterans - some of whom exhibit various stages of PTSD. I think Thor captures this 'syndrome' fairly well as his character exhibits 'compact' twinges of dysfunction - but not enough to jeapordize the mission.

Many reviewers here are 'functional disbelievers' to quote a Hillary comment on an Army General ... and suspending this - perhaps is necessary to overlook some of the impossible situations and just enjoy the romping stomping bodycount.

Reaction to Thor's writing is more a function of the readers background and attitude than anything Thor puts in print and you can almost predetermine how a certain personality will react to the writing and storyline.. While not his best novel - not all can be 'above average' ...

"Hamlet" is for everybody, but not for everybody to enjoy equally. The sad truth is I am one of those who have come, through some application, to feel real appreciation for the play, yet never loved it. The fault is mine and not Shakespeare's, but it is an honest fault worth exploring.

The story is pretty straightforward on its face. The king of Denmark has died, and as his son Hamlet fights overwhelming grief, he comes to discover the father died at the hand of his successor, Hamlet's uncle Claudius. As he contemplates the enormity of this knowledge, he wrestles with the fact his friends and court advisors are in league with the uncle. Even Hamlet's mother has compromised her connection with him by marrying Claudius soon after being widowed. Through all this turmoil a cosmic consciousness slowly emerges in young Hamlet.

"There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio/Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

It's that cosmic consciousness that's at the heart of why "Hamlet" sticks out so. At the same time, it's a revenge play, and in the end one of Shakespeare's bloodiest this side of "Titus Andronicus". "Hamlet's" murky origins are explored in an essay, "A Note On The Sources", included in the Signet edition. This discusses evidence for an earlier text of the play, before the version we have, possibly written by Thomas Kyd who penned a popular bloodbath called "The Spanish Tragedy".

Our "Hamlet" has at times a two-headed aspect; if it were a movie, it might have been co-directed by Quentin Tarantino and Ingmar Bergman. A lot of soul-searching dominates the first three acts; monologues abound, some more gripping than others. The story is kicked off very dramatically by a pair of soldiers who have spotted the ghost of Hamlet's father, but slows up to accommodate one of Shakespeare's overdone devices, the play-within-the-play. Hamlet's madness is a topic of much discussion, but is he even acting mad? It's hard to tell from the text, which has our hero going off in several directions at once. His love for the waifish Ophelia is said to be a great motivator, but all we see him do with her is blow her off.

"This is the story of a man who could not make up his mind." The 1948 film by Laurence Olivier began with that statement, but this question of Hamlet's indecision, like the madness thing, is unsatisfying reductivist. Olivier's film is terrific, in part for some judicious trims that do away with the subplot about a Norwegian invasion and focus more attention on Hamlet himself. One wonders if Shakespeare's longest play is a little too, well, long.

Who is Hamlet? I don't think Shakespeare tries to answer that. What he did was build something so enigmatic that civilization stepped in to fill and refill the blanks.

What we have from Shakespeare is an underbaked or rebaked story, many of the best lines of dialogue in English, a few puns that haven't aged as well, and achingly deep thoughts about the nature of man; alternately nihilist, existentialist, and Christian in tone - sometimes all three at once. Is man just "food for worms" in the end, or is there indeed "a divinity that shapes our ends/Rough-hew them how we will"? Shakespeare was too great an artist to attempt a definitive answer, and that's the glory of "Hamlet". But there's frustration also in the open-ended nature of its characters and narrative. Sometimes you're better off not trying to cram too much into a simple revenge story.

Although I don't read many books for junior readers, Miranda is a mature protagonist, and all her friends - adult and child alike - are so likable it's hard not to connect with them. They all had their flaws, strengths, and insecurities, and you're rooting for them. Hoping Miranda's mom will find a job she likes, that her mom's boyfriend Richard will get a house key, that Sal will talk to Miranda, that Annemarie and Julia will be friends again, that Jimmy will let them work at the deli, and that Marcus will learn to time travel someday. With the simplicity and beauty of the writing and the intriguing puzzle-centered plot, it turned out to be the perfect book to rescue me from my reading slump. I'm not sure how I missed that Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time features prominently in the book as Miranda's constant companion. Reading that classic for the first time in grade school will always be one of my most memorable reading experiences. I can still see the first image I constructed of the garden and Meg and her father as I read. A part of me expected more shocking twists or self-aware profound thoughts, but Rebecca Steed's metaphors are subtle and sparse. One of my favorite passages:

"But sometimes our veils are pushed away for a few moments, like there's a wind blowing it from our faces. And when the veil lifts, we can see the world as it really is, just for those few seconds before it settles down again. We see all the beauty, and cruelty, and sadness, and love.

...

I've thought a lot about these veils. I wonder if, every once in awhile, someone is born without one. Someone who sees the big stuff all the time. Like maybe you."

I devoured this book in a day. I was driven by a need to know which friend of Miranda's was in danger, and if she'd make friends, and who the note-writer was, and how the Fred Flintstone bank, the lost key, Richard's heeled shoe, and the crazy homeless man fit together. Overall a sweet, deeply meaningful coming-of-age story with a little bit of history, adventure, and layman science fiction, something I'd want my son to read when he grows up.

A Lesson Before Dying is clean and clear writing, descriptions that say just enough to evoke an entire scene with all senses engaged, all heart and mind present. His dialogue is bare bone, sparse as the dialogue I so admired as a young writer-in-training, enthralled with that other Ernest--Papa Hemingway, and his unique way of capturing the way that people actually speak rather than the stilted narrative voice of the author him or herself.

He didn't answer.

"What don't matter, Jefferson?"

"Nothing don't matter," he said, looking up at the ceiling but not seeing the ceiling.

"Chicken, dirt, it don't matter," he said.

Ah yes, there is that mastery, like a reincarnation of Hemingway, with an artist's understanding of the way that life moves--not in straight lines, but in circles, ever circling on the same spot, trying out its parameters until it is known, only then shifting to the next circle, a slight distance this way, or that, or even back again. I admire this accuracy portrayed in the written word. The novel becomes life.

The life portrayed in this novel is based on two main characters, set in 1940s Louisiana, the deep south, when racism and segregation ran deep, and a black man was imprisoned just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, innocent that he might be. Jefferson is a simple-minded man who inadvertently ends up in the middle of an armed robbery, and although he has done nothing wrong, is sentenced to die by a legal system that has nothing to do with justice but everything to do with enforcing the status quo. Grant Wiggins seems, at first, Jefferson's opposite--a black man who is educated and intelligent, a teacher at a church school. Both men, however, live in a prison, even as only one of those has tangible bars.

When Jefferson is called "same as a hog" by his own defense attorney, likening him to a dumb animal in the hopes that the jury will deem him innocent out of sheer lack of enough intelligence to commit a crime, his aunt, Grant's grandmother, can accept the final verdict of death, but not the image of her nephew dying like an animal. She calls in a favor from Grant, who reluctantly agrees to visit Jefferson in prison and teach him to die like a man.

If this injustice, the death sentence of an innocent man, cannot be changed in a deeply racist society, then one's attitude about it can be. Jefferson bitterly accepts being called a hog--"it don't matter"--but the story unfolds in those gorgeously clean lines with the meetings between the two men, some of which are nothing more than sitting together in a prison cell for an hour and staring at the ceiling. There are no lectures, no fist-pounding diatribes, no soapbox rantings to vaguely disguise the views of the author in need of getting something off his chest. Book Reviews - Twilight

The Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer is definitely a love story with a little 'unusual, to say the least, twist. Most likely written for a younger market and female, possessing both the heroine and the hero outstanding quality, both sexes and all ages can identify. Twilight provides the framework for the remaining three volumes.

Bella is not accustomed to unwanted or unsolicited attention, though not unattractive by any means is their intelligence and individuality, seemcreating an almost unbridgeable gap between her and her colleagues.

Edward, on the other hand separates the target. His colleagues seem his superiority, which has absolutely nothing to do with his sense of personality. Physically it is on the lines of a superhero figure, although his companions just this sense. Edward and his family do everything in their power to not call attention to itself and, therefore, that are not exactly human. This effortcreates a distance that does not endear them to their peers.

Edward and Bella not more, and yet are irresistibly attracted to each other and both find that this attraction is impossible to ignore. They say "opposites to win," and two people in this situation, could not be otherwise. Through their interaction, we find that both emotionally and increasing opportunities never before explored. The nature of Edward's nature requires openness, acceptance and courageBella, that in any situation that escapes ever logged in, but always felt a sort of "outcasts", irrespective of the fact that it is true is found, Bella attracted to each other to "individual" in the school, the parties seem be his fate.

This story, if I want to describe shortly, following the example of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet rolling with an even darker, if possible. There are plenty of both kinds in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," with a dozen cases that require Holmes' unique detecting skills -- it can be something as simple as locating a letter, or something as complex as foiling a robbery or counterfeiting ring. Doyle's stately, dignified prose is heightened by moments of excitement or horror (" It swelled up louder and louder, a hoarse yell of pain and fear and anger all mingled in the one dreadful shriek"), and he wove in a lot of human psychology into Holmes' cases.

Holmes himself... is Holmes. Doyle didn't like his detective much, but Sherlock's knife-edged intellect and fascination with puzzles are strangely hypnotic -- even if you wouldn't like to be roomies with the guy, it would be amazing just to sit and watch him work. Watson is the perfect counterpoint for Holmes: he's not a genius but is definitely intelligent, warm-hearted and capable.

"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" is a magnificent collection of Holmes' first twelve short cases, filled with murder, intrigue and all sorts of weird crimes. An absolute must-read.
