Since reading "Have a New Husband by Friday" I have tried some of the recommendations and they do work. I'm one of those people addicted to British mysteries, both on TV and in print. I enjoy the older TV crop, Rumple of the Bailey, Miss Marple, Poirot Frost, etc, but I do enjoy some of the new TV productions that the British offer too. As far as books, I am also of the old school, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, etc. Of course, all the authors I like have passed on, and while I do re-read their books over and over, I miss new mysteries of the old school. I say that because if any of you feel as I do, I can offer you a wonderful solution that I surprised and delighted me, and that is the works of Anna Katherine Green. I know there are lots of better informed reviewers on Amazon, so please forgive me if I am preaching to the choir, but I had never heard of Green before, let alone that she was the inspiration of Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Mary Roberts Rinehart, etc. I just had never heard of her, (some American TV producer should read her books and make a US mystery series in the British manner since we have exhausted Christie, Doyle, and Rinehart!), but I digress.

Here is really what I wanted to say, if you love Agatha, and the rest, and miss new mysteries, and are tired re-reading from your existing library, (because you know `whodunit'), than here is a wonderful surprise, you can read the works of Anna Katherine Green! Short and sweet, she `wrote the book' on these types of `locked door' mysteries, or they type favored by you and I. She was American, but the method, the situations, the characters and motives are all as good as the British authors she inspired. And for the record, I'm not anti-American, I'm an American, but its the style that Green did create, that I like so much, and was followed well by the British, that I like so much, I hope you know what I mean. :)

Although I do not share many aspects of Mr. Vonnegut's view of life, I can still appreciate how well he expresses it. This novel, ostensibly about the fateful encounter between an obscure sci-fi writer and a car salesman who is slowly going insane after reading one of his stories, is really about life and politics according to Kurt Vonnegut. Often transparently so. Using minimalistic and hilariously bad doodles the author relates his view of humans as creatures largely determined by genetic and environmental factors (Hitler, according to this book, was "full of bad chemicals," for instance) and his view of politics and society as the tyranny of these influences exerted through systemic means. There is, of course, no organized expression of this thesis, and this ties into my chief criticism of the work: it is rambling. Remarkably so. The narrative is a very chain that just barely binds together the various observations made by the author. His presentation is as irreverent as much of the content. And yet, this work is still very cutting, and the almost child-like explanations of everything from racism to the cold war range from silly to profound. I think, to Mr. Vonnegut's credit, that, as a whole, it is closer to the profound side of things than the silly side, and that's why I've rated it fairly highly. I think the author is wrong on a lot of things, and he could have expressed his views in a more organized fashion without robbing this work of its entertainment value, but there are too many pearls here to dismiss this book. The characters are well-drawn but not particularly deep: par the course for the genre of satire. I recommend this book for what it does right. Yet understanding where Vonnegut goes wrong can be a worthwhile process as well, because, no matter what he may be, he is never boorish or typical in his thinking.

Starting a Teen Book Study Group

If you are looking for a way in summer, connecting with your teenage daughter, are planning to book a group study of girls with her daughter and her friend.

You may think that young people are not good on this idea, but just think once ... might be surprised.

Before bouncing the idea of your daughter and see what their thoughts on the subject. If they show signs of interest, then brainstorm some possible book titles and / or topics. When myDaughter and I started our group last summer we had in mind, some of the girls get together for our church high school youth. So we talked about some of the books that people had time to read.

Next my daughter called to see her friends and acquaintances who might be interested in this idea. Almost everyone was interested in coming to speak and he liked the idea, but many were already well in the summer with other activities. We narrowed the list to about four orfive, that committed, to read the book together and always talking. We have all given entry in the book, we wanted to read, and Grace ended with "What's so surprising?" a popular book by Phillip Yancey.

I broke the book into three or four sections of the chapter, and we decided to meet Wednesday evening six weeks. Overall, the study went very well, and it was very rewarding. We all remember him happy, and it was greatspend time with my daughter.

If you do something that might be interested in doing, thinking, here are some tips I got in the way:

Do not take it personally if not all come every week. Everyone has busy schedules and conflicts. Probably only one or two girls came every week, or even lose a daughter. You'll notice that conversations may differ considerably depending on the mix of girls, which is good!



Meet in a low-key,Relaxed atmosphere, so that all feel comfortable and not as a class. We have blankets to sit on a local park and had snacks every week.



Not to pressure you into "the group. You're not there to teach, but only to facilitate the call. I found it useful to choose a book on the applications included the study group. Some books have the questions in the back. This particular book a companion who had the study guidemust be purchased separately. Let the girls talk and ask questions if there is a big lull in the conversation. Although it might look "wrong" answers, let the girls compete to be first and see what conclusions are challenging. There is rare that you should mediate. Instead of directly challenging someone to help you ask more questions, get a different answer.



In the same note as the last point, do not feel, or give advice to allright answers. Most young people love someone, listened to, especially for adults, their thoughts and feelings. Do not expect that you know everything, just want to hear. You will notice that the boys all come from different family backgrounds and do not always have other people to feel they need to talk.



encourage girls to come to the talks, even if they do their reading for the week. You'll find that most are embarrassed, if nottheir "homework" and do not want to show. Encourage them to come, though not in the community to promote reading among girls.



Dads can I study this book groups with their teenage children and their friends! You can goof around and maybe take some more steam off before getting to the point (a sort of outdoor activities), but teenage boys, to learn together and from each other and be happy.

A book study group is a great way tosome of your friends know teenagers. Encourage them to invite people who do not know them very well ... People from school or work they want to know better. It 's a great way to take the first step towards friendship make teaching them to reach others.

Matilda was (and still is) one of my favorite childhood movies. I remember going to watch it in theaters when it came out and watched it endlessly when it came out in VHS. So, when I found this book at my thrift store for a dollar, I absolutely had to pick it up.

Matilda was just an amusing, captivating read. At once, you have a heroine you can root for and just love to pieces because she's so unique. As I was reading, I kept picturing the parts happening in the book as they were in the movie. (For example, the part where one of Matilda's classmates are singing the 'difficulty' poem and Trunchbull yells "Why are all these women married?!" That's seriously my favorite part of the movie and this part of the book had me in stitches, too.) The book was not only cute, but it was pretty funny. Some parts had me chuckling a little, but most parts had me laughing out loud.

Even though I enjoyed this book immensely, I still have to say that I love the movie a little bit more. I think it's mostly a nostalgia thing. I just loved all the actors who portrayed the characters in the movie. I also loved movie"Miss Honey" more than book"Miss Honey" and I sympathized more with movie"Matilda" than with book"Matilda".

All of that being said, Matilda is still a keeper on my shelf. I think this is one book that I'm going to find myself re-reading for comfort (just as I rewatch the movie) and on those rainy days when you just want to read something familiar. I definitely can't wait until my sister's a little bit older so that she can read Matilda. I definitely recommend this book to children and adults (especially if those adults have kids...). It's really an enjoyable read for all ages.

Upon picking up Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and reading it, I was somewhat doubtful.
I had read Tithe and Ironside by Holly Black (both fictional depictions of the Fae) and thought them wonderful books
because of how well crafted they were. But Never, never has a book made me fall in "love" with the Faerie.

Until now.

Wicked Lovely stars Aislinn who is a very likable character.
She is headstrong (a little too so sometimes) and very independent.
The reason for my initial uncertainty was that this book bore a character
who resented the Fae.

This book was so different, so unique that I knew that it was going to be either a hit or miss.
It was, by all means, a hit.

I loved this book so much. It opened my heart and mind
to the Faerie in such a way that no other author has done before.
To make a reader so in love with a mythological race as Tolkien did is a great achievement indeed!

In addition, the fact that Miss Marr cares for her subsidiary characters (not just the foremost ones) made me quite pleased as well. As it happens, Donia (my favorite character in this novel) and Keenan come into romantic relations with one another- thus, making me immeasurably happy.

The world that is crafted here within the pages of Wicked Lovely is like no other.

Prepare yourself for something fantastic, because that is truly what this is: Fantastic.

For me, after having read Mrs. Dalloway, I quite loathed Virginia Woolf and her experimental style, which defied all styles. This novel was not easy to get through, though much more manageable than her later works because it mimics an actual novel style, rather than her signature, stream of conscious. Then again, I have yet to fully realize this first woeful tale by Woolf, other than to truly appreciate this woman's incredible talent.

To be honest, the only reason I bothered with this first venture of Woolf's was by design rather than my choice. A friend and I decided to form our own book club, and her favorite, of course, was Woolf. And thus, I was committed.

Meet Rachel Vinrace, a twenty-four year old young woman, adrift and impressionable, considered very 'unformed' and vague by those around her. Under the care of her aunt and uncle, Ridley and Helen Ambrose, she journeys across the ocean from England to a resort town in South America, and thrust into a world of humanity and emotion, nature and variegated personalities that are at once overwhelming and instructive. Her birth of understanding, which are both strange and exciting experiences, Rachel begins to conceive and formulate herself through a series of experimental interactions with her relatives, especially Helen, as well as with colorful, if not seemingly stolid characters from the nearby hotel. Unshaped perceptions leave her breathless yet wiser, and barely does she scrape the surface of life, experience and self-understanding before Rachel herself is extinguished.

This is a haunting, romantically tragic tale of something gained and then fleetingly, it is all lost, leaving everything, and everyone in turmoil and yet, continuing on. At first, the story is incoherent, boring, at times scattered and frustrating to read. Characters and events which seemed, at first, to have no purpose, at times appearing to be trivial, begin to take shape and form. All these intricately woven pieces which become the very basis in which Rachel can experience her world, the real world and herself, slowly and so powerfully are pieced together and you may not even realize it until much later on, like I did and still piecing together. These descriptions of other British people in a remote exotic port is a contrast to Rachel's own growing sense of awareness and independence, each interaction is carefully placed and not random. This is where Woolf excels, providing the seemingly unimportant and even dismissive scenes and making them relevant, later on, when the reader has read the book.

A few chapters are painfully aware and poignant and wonderful, heady and traumatic in its sharp intuitive vocalization of human emotions and realization of defects in human nature itself. And all against the beautiful backdrop of a South America that I, as a reader, have never experienced. You will ask yourself for the first whole half, What Is The Point? And then, like a train wreck, it's there, hitting you in the face, as Woolf weaves people and experiences, emotions and underlying tones of social mores and scripted human behaviors, all of which presses upon every character like a net, and ensnares the reader. It is layer upon layer and easy to miss the subtle influence and connections that Woolf effortlessly weaves and throws right before your eyes. Call it genius or magic, you will be astounded, or numbed. And if you're careful enough, you'll glimpse what Woolf was trying to say. You will look upon pain, and will flinch. Don't look away, or you may miss it.

I for one am still reeling from the sensory onslaught, her words like water over rocks and I have to admit, I loved this book, and I was utterly perplexed by it. It is, like most rare and profound stories, an emotional voyage, filled with symbols and allusions, and something which leaves THAT something inside you, burrowing and forever embedded in your very thoughts. I want to read it again, mark the pages and remember those eerie descriptions of human frailty and human experiences rendered in such a way to leave me breathless and engrossed. It's safe to say, that I am quite taken and can't wait to read the next Woolf story. So read on, good reader, read on, if you dare.

Eventhough the protagonists in Leviathan are 15 and 16 years old, Westerfeld's clean writing makes this book entirely appropriate for the younger middle grade (ages 8-12) set. My 11 yo really enjoyed the story - and he's taken to sporting a knit cap he says is a Bowler Hat.

Deryn is a girl who disguises herself as a boy so she can join the Air Service in 1914 Britain. Prince Aleksander is the half-royal not-heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne who struggles with duty and survival when the assassination of his parents pitches the world into war. Their paths collide and Westerfeld's fast-paced action doesn't disappoint. Oh, and there's Darwinist creatures pitted against Clanker machines, and the technology is a delicious mixture of retro steam and futuristic custom-designed creatures. Scott Westerfeld's fantastic imagination, combined with Keith Thompson's gorgeous line drawings, creates a feast for the mind and eyes.

The only drawback to this book is its ending: curses upon Westerfeld for his cliff-hanger books! You must read the next book Behemoth, but it doesn't come out until October 2010. Westerfeld says he will probably tour when Behemoth is released, so I may have to stalk him. The only question: how do I get my e-book signed? I might have to resort to having him sign something else. Maybe that collectible Leviathan art that would really look awesome on my wall.

Westerfeld writes smart and very clean books. The violence is real, but not gratuitous, and almost completely bloodless. There is death in Leviathan. This is war, after all. Alek accidentally kills a soldier, and Deryn is involved in a couple battles where fatalities occur. The dead are hinted at, but not described. Unless your child is very sensitive to such things, Leviathan is an excellent book for advanced readers ages 9+.

I will be shocked if Leviathan isn't made into a movie. It is action packed and has "summer blockbuster" written all over it.

How to make your children like the books

Birth to adulthood, children are taught to hate as the pound. Maybe not on purpose I'm sure everyone agrees, children hate books. Now they do. If you are one of the lucky mothers who kept their child to the computer instead of reading then my hat forward. But my mother was not so favorable. Some say the child distaste for books is genetic and that "unless" something born academic. I argue with that. Children areEducated by a youth work related to school books and hard. Why would they like? Everyone has an interest. Everyone. Some of us have many, many people love a certain thing. Some have an obsession. The point is that the books documenting these interests. Knowledge.

So how can we make a child interested in books and how to get from them, the Playstation 3 and on a beanbag with a copy of your favorite Siegfried Sassoon? One step at a time.

Tip numberone. Separate books with the school. This is truly the biggest step. We must stop thinking that books are a form of punishment and fear that this person is a way to improve themselves. Ok, little can be lowered for a 10 year old but they can learn. Take a library. Because I am not Bookshop library? A library for a 10-year-old is hands down more fun than a library. Bright colors. Many comfortable chairs. Generally, childrenrunning around screaming. Comics. Cups of tea. You know those. Waterstones is a great place to start. Make a day of it.

Tip number two. Left to choose the book. This may sound stupid, but say the number of parents who force their Shakespeare in young hands and expect them to row of A Mid-Summer Nights Dream Any surprises me know. Then you're in a bookstore. Let her go. Tell them how to select each book. Even a comic (or "GraphicNovel ") is fine, but id recommend a revision of the content. Every book ever.

Tip number three. Sit and read with them. I know, I know we have to do everything, but try to take time. This could be the difference between them is always a doctor and a cleaner. You know what I mean. It is important to sit down and read them well. Back in the library is a great idea, as is also a place, they will start referring to books and entertainment. You could also splashand buy an orange juice. Trying to read things in common? How about just looking for a couple of books full of photos. Children always love the pictures from the depths of space and you can begin to explain or to learn for themselves. Macro photos of insects always come good.

There you have it. My three tips to help you hate your children lbs. Before you start this the better. Books are shown to extend our knowledge and vocabulary. What a great way to spend timeto learn with your children about their interests and help them to becoming a better person.

Counting words in books for children - Interview with writer's retreat

Q: Many of the fantasy novels I've ever seen young people for a long time. It 'a kind of obligation to this teen fantasy? I have aRoman, I'm working on, but probably not much time when I finished and I'm worried that publishers are trying Volume heavy.

A: It seems that the Harry Potter series, things have changed in that respect, and novels for middle grade readers and young lost more than one result. However, these fantasy novels as indicative of how a book should be long. To make a certain length, it's just a mistake. You do not havehave a good story that needs to flow properly, go at the right time and keep the reader engaged.However said, it is much easier to write too much and then leave, how can I add whole sections, introduced in the middle, or completely new characters and plots.

Yes, many fantasy novels can be very long, but not all. I'm not sure about the exact statistics, but more probably about 250 or 300 pages, whether in print, but as the possession of the mammothWord is one of the Harry Potter novels later. You should probably ask if you are not sure your story is for young people is only half or, usually, than, say about 150 pages of the novel most.Your may also have exacerbated the process to be used during processing which reduces the apparent size of the finished product.
