The allegory of Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment, one of the more famous works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, is considered "the first great novel of his mature period," (Frank, 1995) and is one of his more famous books, rivaled only by The Brothers Karamazov. What makes Crime and Punishment such a classic? Perhaps because it is a picture of the only classic, and greatest story of all time. Crime and Punishment is an allegory of Salvation.

Self-justified

The main character, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, was a poor student at a university, and was overcome with hate toward an old pawnbroker, and decided to rid the world of her for the greater good of everyone. He believed that she was a "louse," and since everyone would be happier without her, his actions would be justified. He believed that he had broken the letter of the law only, but that it didn't have any authority over him anyway because it was written by people just as low as himself. He didn't believe in God, and in prison he was convinced that he didn't deserve his treatment, and that it was something he simply needed to get over with. He had no higher authority, so he said "my conscience is at rest." This is a picture of man before he is touched by the merciful salvation of Christ.

A Troubled Man

Although Raskolnikov justified his actions in killing the old woman, he still felt an overwhelming sense of guilt and fear over what he did. He worked very hard at keeping it a secret, and at first he thought he could live with the guilt that sat in back of his mind, but he was wrong. Raskolnikov had horrible dreams, was always sick, and one of the other characters noticed that he was constantly "set off by little things" for no apparent reason (though the reader knew that it was only because it reminded him of his crime). This represents a man who knows in his heart that he is a sinner, but who will not turn and repent from his sin.

Unending Love

Sonya Semyonovna Marmeladov was the daughter of a drunkard who "took the yellow card" and prostituted herself to support her family. Throughout the book, Sonya began to love Raskolnikov. Eventually, Raskolnikov told Sonya his secret. Sonya was horrified, but still loved him and forgave him after her initial shock wore off. As Raskolnikov was fighting inside with his conscience and his sins, he repeatedly snapped at her, refused her comfort, yelled at her, and so on. He was a bitter, angry, hateful man--and yet Sonya forgave him for everything he did to her, and everything he had done in his past. What redeeming quality Sonya saw in the wretch and why she forgave him, one cannot begin to comprehend; aside from the simple truth that Sonya was a loving, gentile, merciful girl. She saw that Raskolnikov needed someone to love him and she reached out to him, even when he repeatedly pushed her away. Sonya's love for him is a picture of Christ's unending and perfect love to His sinful people.

A Silent Witness

When Raskolnikov finally broke down and confessed his crime, Sonya moved to Siberia with him. Raskolnikov expected this, and knew that telling her not to come would be fruitless. She visited him often in prison and wrote to his family for him. But although Raskolnikov expected her to preach to him and push the Gospel in his face, she did not. Sonya followed the scripture's instruction to Christian wives with non-Christian husbands in 1 Peter 3:1--" Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives..." The verse tells women to be good examples of Christ to their non-Christian husbands rather than to preach to them and try to convert them, and that is exactly what Sonya did, even though she was not married to him. She did not try to convert him with words; rather she won him with her love. She did not push the Testament into Raskolnikov's hands, he asked for it. When she did bring it, she did not pester him to read it. She had faith, and showed Raskolnikov the love of Christ through her actions. In the end, it paid off. Although Dostoevsky does not specifically say that Raskolnikov was converted, he does imply that he eventually became a Christian when he mused "Can not her own convictions now be mine?"

The truth will set you free

When Raskolnikov finally realized that he loved Sonya, he accepted that he was a criminal, and a murderer. When he finally accepted that he was a sinner, he repented and had a new life in him. He said he felt like "he had risen again" and that Sonya "lived only in his life." By life, Dostoevsky refers to his mentality. Before, he had been a living dead man in prison. He was hated by his inmates, was almost killed by them in an outbreak, was unaffected by anything that happened to him or his family, and eventually became ill from it all. But after his resurrection, he repented from his sins, learned to move on with his life, and started to change. He began to converse with his inmates, and they no longer hated him. Sonya was alive in his "life" because of her love for him. When he was changed, she was so happy that she became sick with joy, to the point that she was ill in bed. Dostoevsky paints a picture of a redeemed man at the end of his novel--redeemed both by the law, and by God. This picture symbolizes the miracle of salvation through Christ.

An amazing Allegory

Dostoevsky was a wonderful writer because of his use of dialogue to tell the story, his descriptive scenes, his powerfully developed characters, and their inner dialogue. He often times told you that something was happening by only telling you what the character who was speaking at the time said in response to what was going on. For example, if Sonya was standing up, Dostoevsky would write "... `hey, what do you stand for?' for Sonya had stood."

He also painted such good descriptions of his characters, that by the middle of the book he didn't have to say that Raskolnikov was musing in the corner of the room, glaring at anyone who was brave enough to look at him, while he stewed in grief under his old ratted cap, because you knew from how well he was described earlier and how well his character was developed from the dialogue, that he was doing exactly that.

His characters are so real, they almost frighten you because you see the things they do and feel and experience reflected in your own life. They are not perfect--in fact they are all incredibly flawed, but they are a joy to read.

His ending is superb, because he closes the story without actually telling you everything. He never says that Raskolnikov was converted, he never says when he got out of prison, and he never says that Sonya and he were married, but you know that it happened. The last scene of the story is so superb, it makes you want to read it again, just to experience the joy all over again.

But what really made Crime and Punishment the classic that it was is the picture of the best story in the world, the classic story of the world, showing through. The story of the Gospel, of Jesus Christ's unending love and sin and salvation is clearly portrayed, and makes a joyous read.

Audio review: I had a hard time reading the book, simply because it was so huge that it was intimidating. I bought (ouch) the audio book of Crime and Punishment, recorded by Anthony Heald who did a fantastic job reading. His voices for the characters perfectly matched them, he felt for them, and he acted them. None of them were cheesy (yeah you all know how lame some male readers are at acting female voices). He read fast enough that the story didn't drag at all, but not so fast that you'd feel like you'd miss something if you didn't listen hard. I will definitely re-listen to the audio book.

The worst happens: their ship is attacked and sunk, and young Phillip (now injured and blind) finds himself marooned on a tiny island with an old black man named Timothy. Although Phillip's friends on Curaçao had much more relaxed attitude toward blacks, Phillip can't see, he's scared to death, and he treats Timothy as an American used to segregation would. That is something that old Timothy is not willing to accept.

This is a wonderful story about survival and acceptance with the rock solid character of Timothy at the center of it all. The setting of the tiny island is very well done, as is the use of dialect. This is a book that has a very high ethical purpose, and it succeeds because the author tells a believable, mesmerizing story-- he does not preach a sermon. Theodore Taylor has written other books, and I'd certainly like to sample more.

"A wealth of Katherines" is written by award-winning writer, John Green (book prize was given to his first "Looking for Alaska). This was his second book published and very popular among young readers. Here is a brief summary :

Colin Singleton is a prodigy who has just graduated from high school and was subsequently dumped by his girlfriend - Katherine # 19 His penchant for girls who meet only go by the name Catherine, and his experienceOver the years, for a touching, funny, romantic and intelligent story about growing to do. The characters of the gut are all unique, and the use of footnotes (the fun) helped make this an interactiveand fun to read.

I did not know how the mathematical approach to most things. I thought the story bogged down a little, and I'm not a math geek, I still found it interesting and strange math that somebody would be based. Very charming, really.

This book gave me a good feeling. I laughed, I grimaced, I cried and rooted for two supposed outsiders of society, seeking love and recognition only in their own way. I recommend this book because it is a fun, fasteasy to read for a desire for a romance with a little twist.

Abundance of Katherines was put on a whim, he took perhaps his amazing coverage, but once taken, could not get out and I was immediately involved in these lives, characters and wanted to know more. There is also a book that "teaches" is not only human interaction, but little of historical facts, anagramming (which I think I'm addicted to), cultures, languages and beready to accept new things and changes. It was an out of the way store and so we didn't have to wait as long as some customers did in more popular bookshops, but I lined up after 9am Saturday June 21 with other eager J.K. Rowling readers and purchased my copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I even got one of the specially-marked `DO NOT OPEN BEFORE 21st JUNE 2003' book boxes as a collector's item. Before last Saturday 195 million copies of Rowling's Books I-IV had been sold in 55 languages across more than 200 countries. With Book V there is more Harry Potter around - much more with its 766 pages and some 13 million books already printed - one million of them in Australia.

In this latest volume of Rowling's planned 7 book saga, Harry Potter and his friends do yet another year at Hogwarts School. There is a new teacher to hate, new tricks and antics to get up to, and new spells, games and fun that will keep readers intrigued for hours. The book has the most involved battle scene in all of the five books (involving about twenty witches and wizards attacking backwards and forwards). What most captures the imagination, though, is the challenges of growing up. Harry and his classmates are up to their 5th year 'OWLs' (Ordinary Wizarding Level exams), and Harry struggles with adolescence, self-esteem, teasing, longing for affirmation from a mentor, trying to figure girls out, cramming for exams, and losing someone close to him. At one point Harry thought he should have been chosen for a special responsibility (rather than a friend) and he worried anxiously, `Did this make him as arrogant as Draco Malfoy? Did he think himself superior to everyone else? Did he really believe he was better than Ron?' (p.151) Some Christians criticise Harry's situational ethics, but his struggles over decision-making are those that young (and old) can readily identify with.

Apart from adolescent struggles, there was concern after Book IV that the books were getting more graphically evil. Rowling admits her portrayal of evil is getting darker, and that this is necessary to show the true nature of evil (as bad and to be fought against). However, I found Book V to be not as dark as Book IV, but it did deal in more depth with dying and grief. These themes of death, grief, emotional struggle and appropriate use of power are not always neatly resolved but are definitely worth exploring in conversation with our children and with young people around us.

A key lesson that came through is the importance of pulling together. Whether on the Quidditch sport field or in the battle against 'He who can't be named', unity is important. When Harry accepted his destiny, he went to Hogwarts to learn and equip himself for the tasks ahead. This year Hogwart's Sorting Hat adds to its usual start-of-term song this warning to stand together:

Though condemned I am to split you
Still I worry that it's wrong ...
For our Hogwarts is in danger
From external, deadly foes
And we must unite inside her
Or we'll crumble from within (pp. 186-187).

Professor Dumbledore and others who are pledged to fight evil band together and commit to one another in the Order of the Phoenix. The Phoenix is a mythological creature that rises to life from its own ashes, and is known as the `resurrection bird.' The phoenix in the Harry Potter series has saved the life of both Harry and Dumbledore. The bird and its potential for new life is an appropriate symbol of their common struggle for a better world.

As Christians, we gather in resurrection communities that could be called a kind of `Order of the Phoenix' but are more commonly known as churches. I'll be exploring the themes from this latest book with young people in our church, and lining up again next year for Book VI.

Back to School Organizing For Kids 101 - Backpacks and Book Bags

Backpacks and book bags are a staple food in the school back. Each child needs at least one! Have you seen what they look like inside? Most of the time, are full of cards in an illegal way. I saw children digging up all the books and paper in search of many, what they need or want.

Here are some tips to keep you organized your backpacks and bags of books. No more round on the ground or you lose your job!

When buying a new backpack or> Backpack, make sure they have to help these characteristics, things neat and tidy!

Pockets This is a great place for the construction of small objects such as zipper bags in your pens, pencils, rulers, lip gloss, so keep things often find these areas. If your bag has outside pockets, use the place inside. If your bag has neither, buy a pen or pencil container orzippered pocket for storing small items included and in one place. Try to find a bag that is outside and inside pockets for better organization.
Interior pockets This is a great place for little things that you want to keep more money for security, such as keys, cell phones, etc. do not put expensive things that are important or in pockets where they can be easily removed.
Plastic Zipper This is an ideal place for those pens, pencils, etc. girls can hold a separate lipGloss, hair clips, etc. If you have special small items you have for a particular category are considering purchasing a separate zippered pocket for this class and label accordingly.
drink bottled water, sports drinks, soft drinks, etc. in a bag with a better network and stored on the outside, away from books and newspapers.
Multiple pockets, if you participate in sports or other extracurricular activities bandwidth requiring additional tools are considering buying a bag more to save the transmissionseparately for each activity. This is the way to keep things together. Just do not forget to take the case precisely when you need it!
Regularly clean the bag, you go through and cleaned daily. And 'better, you can just go home. Put your trash in the trash - but note that the waste of the teacher! List your items up at noon when you get home. You do not want week-old, moldy bread in the bottom of the bag!
File It Away file your important documents when cleaningYour pocket (after home is best). Pin-up reminders, notes of the project, etc. on your bulletin board or message area. Write important dates on the blackboard. You'll never forget one thing, if you do it right away.
Prepare For Tomorrow Pack your bag before going to bed. This interruption of your time in the morning ready. They are also less likely to do something significant if it is done now, as the first password to enter the morning rush out the door. If you are not aMorning person packing your books now you can sleep later in the morning!

How to describe Scott Pilgrim and his strange little world? It's funny, to be sure. It's seemingly normal, to a degree. When we meet new characters, we often get their level rating (Scott is, of course, "awesome"). Everything about the series is so Generation Now--Scott is straight but he has a gay roommate; they share a small studio apartment and sleep in the same bed, platonically; Scott plays in a band with a female drummer, which is cool, although the band doesn't quite rock at first (but they have heart). None of it is overdone, though. In fact, there's so much genuine sweetness to it (in a good way; not in some treacly, sentimental manner) that you can't help but wish you were part of the group--part of this world, even, because it's a pretty different world.

That is to say, it's Toronto, but some magical, videogame-like qualities exist. These characters exist mostly in the real world but at the same time, it has some decidedly offbeat properties. Scott is an innocent, a supercool, eminently likable cipher who happens to be almost irresistibly endearing.

As the series begins, 23-year-old Scott has just started dating Knives Chau, a 17-year-old high school student. It's all very innocent; they haven't even kissed, just hugged. Scott is recovering from a devastating breakup a year ago and views Knives as a way to move on without getting his heart too involved. His friends and sister waste no time ripping into Scott for this robbing-the-cradle transgression, but Scott sticks with it, even after meeting Ramona Flowers. Ramona is the girl of Scott's dreams, literally. He keeps seeing her in visions, so when he sees her at a party, come to life in strange garb, he makes his move.

The series has the feel of a gentle romantic comedy at times, and the banter back and forth between Scott and Ramona (and even Scott and Knives) has the kind of meet-cute quality of cinema. It's also hilariously hip, metatextual, and self-referential (again, it's a Generation Now thing). When Ramona explains that she's been in Scott's dreams because there's a really convenient subspace highway that happens to run through his head, Scott doesn't really question it. Later, they get to know each other and decide that some of their stories will be revealed in different volumes, before sleeping together (again, platonically, because they've been holed up inside together because of a freak blizzard--although it's clear both characters will want to do more than just sleep together eventually).

And here we come to the real meat of the story. As Scott begins to see Ramona, he first receives an email, then a letter, from a man who wants to schedule time to fight Scott. Scott ignores them, but this is a crazy guy who won't be ignored. It turns out Ramona has seven evil ex-boyfriends, all of whom Scott will have to fight and defeat if he wants to continue seeing the delightful Ramona. (And if you're wondering what ever happened to Knives Chau, well, there's more to that as well.)

The content is never too adult (but trust me, adults will--and do--enjoy it quite a bit), but it's more appropriate for teens and older (the publisher gives it a 13+ rating). The story and art are definitely manga-influenced, but it isn't straight manga. It's a hybrid. A very good hybrid, it turns out. Scott Pilgrim is one of those series that catches fire and, when you check in to see what all the buzz is about, you realize why immediately. This much clever, inventive fun deserves to be a smash.

This is an extremely important book. The proof of it is that even the official copy in the Library of Congress disappeared (!). Moreover, even after his death, the author continues to be the object of a smear campaign (see internet).

His book is not less than a frontal attack on US intelligence and concomitantly on those who control it.
Its portrait of Allen Dulles, a longtime intelligence director, says it all: `I am a lawyer'; in other words, a servant. But of whom?
This book unveils the existence of a secret cabal, a Power Elite (G. William Domhoff), a `deep State' (P.D. Scott) within the US and its government as well as in about 40 host countries.
This Power Elite uses the Secret Team of top intelligence and military commanders as its long arm and protects it. Together they stand above the law and the democratic process. They get things done, whether they have the political authorization or not.
They dispose of a vast undercover political, military, intelligence, business, media and academic infrastructure, in the US as well as worldwide. They don't respect the nation State and are able to create, to influence and to topple governments in the hemisphere controlled by them.

The author gives a remarkable insight into the inner workings, the logistics, the strategies and the tactics of the intelligence agency. Its creation and history show that President H. Truman never intended to create an autonomous operational agency in the clandestine field. L.F. Prouty also gives valuable information about the U2- G. Powers incident (apparently to torpedo the US/USSR peace talks) and the Pentagon papers (an intelligence whitewash).

At the end, the author poses the all important question: `Can any President ever be strong enough really to rule?'

This book is a must read for all those interested in US history and for all those who want to understand the world we live in.

The 39 Clues Book 2: One False Note for $6.64

My first warning is to go and read book #1 The Maze of Bones before you read this one. You can read book #2 without reading book #1, but it is hard to sum up a book in 1 or 2 pages (as the author does at the beginning of the book here) and not miss out on anything. My second warning is this - do NOT start this series if you don't plan on buying all of the other books in the series as it is highly addictive! I found myself racing along with Amy & Dan to find out what happened next and swallowed the book in one sitting. It was also great to learn a little bit more about the famous composer Mozart and his family. The book also really made me want to travel to Austria to see everything that the children saw for myself. If only I had the money and the time.

Anyway, this book is a bit different in that Amy & Dan argue a lot in it. Most of their arguments are due to Dan being a little know-it-all and Amy constantly putting herself, and her brother, down and intimating that neither of them is clever enough to really win the prize at the end of the 39 clues. Some may say that they are being typical siblings, (and I would agree), but it may be perceived as a little bit excessive. I understand why the author felt that it was necessary, though, as the 2 siblings are together all the time and I know that I need my alone time to enable to me to keep an even keel around other people. Also, in the first book, Amy & Dan were reacting to circumstances around them and now they have to be more active in choosing their routes and deciding if they want to continue in the race now that they know what they are in for. This naturally leads to discussions, which can easily become heated. Dan & Amy are definitely opposites in almost everything so there were a lot of these "discussions." I wasn't too bothered with the arguing, actually, as I come from a really big family and I am sure that is how we sounded to outsiders, too. Only someone who a brother or sister can truly understand that you can argue with someone and still love them and back them up no matter what.

This book is much more fast paced than the first book, which had a bit of a slow start for me. For those of you who didn't really enjoy the first book in the series, The Maze of Bones, and were a little bit bored, please give this one a try as I think that you will enjoy it more. The first book was needed to set the stage and introduce the characters, but, now that is over, we are ready to get to the good stuff. I really couldn't wait to find out what would happen next! There was more dialogue and action in this second book and it may be due to the fact that it was written by a different author. It appears that each book will be written by a different, well-known children's author so the style of this book is a little bit different than the first one, but I didn't really notice and it wasn't different enough to jar me out of the story. I found Gordon Korman's writing style was well suited for children and was clear and easy to read. This book also comes with a pack of 6 cards that you can use to play games and collect clues online. Many of the cards contain puzzles that children need to solve to unlock clues online and I love that Scholastic tried to make this a completely interactive series. My nephew and I spent hours in front of the computer entering all of the cards, playing the games, and solving the puzzles on the missions that were available. This is a great book to read with children.
